I received a PhD in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania and an MD from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. My thesis focused on mechanisms of how cytokine signaling impacts hematopoietic stem cell fitness, with a focus on mitigation of DNA damage. Here at UCSF I am a resident in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, and a Herbert Perkins fellow in cellular therapy and transfusion medicine. I am interested in mechanisms of inflammation in adipose tissue and its attenuation. After college I did a postbac at Oak Ridge National Lab in the Nanoscale Sensors and Actuators Division. My research focused on interfacing nanoscale sensors into living cells for real time single cell redox assays. I did my PhD work at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where I studied how the immune system interacts with nanoscale polymeric particles that were being investigated as drug delivery vehicles. This work resulted in publications in PNAS and the Journal of Clinical Investigation among others. At all points in my career my studies have highly relied on optical microscopy in living biological samples. My post-doc focus was on studying how stromal cells in the lung coordinate and organize immune responses.
